Elisa Toffoli, più conosciuta con il nome d’arte di Elisa, è una cantautrice, compositrice, polistrumentista, arrangiatrice e produttrice discografica italiana. Originaria di Monfalcone, Elisa è una delle poche cantautrici italiane a scrivere la quasi totalità dei testi in inglese. Il suo repertorio è costituito principalmente da adult alternative rock e pop rock, ma numerose sono le influenze di vari generi musicali, quali ad esempio, elettronica, ambient, trip hop, grunge e soul. Venne scoperta dal grande pubblico a 19 anni con l’album d’esordio Pipes & Flowers, ma la notorietà giunse grazie alla vittoriosa partecipazione al Festival di Sanremo 2001 con la canzone Luce (tramonti a nord est). La cantautrice ha venduto circa 2 milioni di dischi, prevalentemente in Italia, in 12 anni di carriera.

C’è mancato poco che l’Italia finisse relegata per la prima volta dal suo ingresso nella competizione. Di certo non per colpa dell’artista che ci rappresentava, ma piuttosto per la mia scelta di un brano sì accattivante e pop, ma che si allontana un po’ dai gusti piuttosto stereotipati delle canzoni che quasi regolarmente vincono il concorso. Speriamo in meglio per la prossima edizione! Nel frattempo, ecco chi ha apprezzato “50mila” di Nina Zilli:

Una volta finite le superiori mi sono trasferita per 2 anni negli States, prima a Chicago e poi a New York.
Sono laureata, ma non esercito la professione per cui ho studiato.
Sono una pianista, al momento con un braccio rotto. Suono la chitarra e scrivo canzoni che poi arrangio come più mi piace. Ho studiato canto lirico in conservatorio, da soprano. L’opera non era molto nelle mie corde e quando mi chiesero di vestirmi da novizia per il saggio finale, decisi che forse era meglio smettere. Preferivo nettamente il rock’n’roll.

Ho iniziato ad esibirmi live a 13 anni, con un gruppo di rockettari della mia scuola, già ottimi musicisti.
Ho sempre ascoltato un sacco di musica, grazie ai miei amici maschi (questo glielo devo). Partendo dal punk, dal metal e dal rock anni 70, piano piano sono arrivata alla mia musica perfetta: quella degli anni 50’ e 60’. Americana (il primo soul della motown, l’r’n’b della stax, il surf, il rock’n’roll…), inglese (sia i Beatles che gli Stones, non ho mai capito perché si debba scegliere. Lo ska degli Specials, dei Selecter, dei Madness e compagnia bella. E i Clash. Rock’n’Roll all’anima di Joe Strummer.) jamaicana (rocksteady, ska original, reggae) e italiana (il beat magistralmente orchestrato da Morricone) dal rock’n’roll bianco di Celentano a Mina e Caterina Valente.

Ancora poppante fondai un gruppo garage beat con cui ho girato tutti i festival e i locali da beattaroli italiani per un paio d’anni.
Subito dopo seguirono “Chiara&Gliscuri”, il nome del gruppo si rifà agli anni 60 italiani di Rita La Zanzara, ma rispetto a prima, le sonorità si spostano verso la Jamaica. Il rocksteady di Alton Ellis, Delroy Wilson e Phyllis Dillon sono stati i punti di riferimento più importanti.
Con Chiara&Gliscuri, è arrivato anche il primo contratto discografico. Nel frattempo ero già stata vj ad Mtv e co-conduttrice (e autrice di tutti i miei interventi e delle interviste) dell’ultima edizione del Roxy Bar di Red Ronnie, in onda su TMC2. La tv però, con tutto il divertimento e le esperienze che mi ha regalato, non era cosa per me. Ho sempre voluto cantare. Non volevo passare per la presentatrice che si regala il vezzo di provarci anche da cantante.

Soul, rocksteady/reggae e beat sono da sempre i miei amori più grandi ed è per questo che negli anni ho continuato a collaborare con band legate a questi generi, ultimi tra tutti gli Africa Unite, per i quali ho cantato “Bomboclaat Crazy” nell’ultimo disco “4 riddim 4 unity”, Giuliano Palma & The Blue Beaters e i Franziska, nei dischi e nei concerti in giro per Italia ed Europa.

Oggi scrivo quello che canto. E mi chiamo Nina Zilli.

Hey Countdowners!

At the end of the year I would like to say a big thanks to everyone, who took part in our 12 excellent editions in 2009.
Special thanks to Marco for the great work in the whole year.
There were many interesting, inspiring, catchy, progressive and funny songs, but now let’s see, which one is the favourite of our community in 2009.

The Showdown is based on our 36 medal winner songs, which come from 19 countries (Norway is the most represented with five tracks), and were selected from more than 500 entries. You can download an archive file, including all the competing songs.

Everybody can participate, who is an active member of the forum. Voting format is according to the official TC rules (top ten favourites from 1 point to 12 points, and please don’t vote to your own country). You can add your votes in this forum topic or send it to my e-mail address.
The deadline to vote in Showdown is on 6th of January at 23:59 (CET).
